I mean that's always the case, I guess, but CHRIST. Global pandemic shuts down the world, masks have become fashion staples, people are showing true community while others show... the lack thereof.

Lots has happened since March, since I last stepped foot in the CFCR studio. Time has both flown and trickled like a leaky faucet.

Music has definitely been a saving grace, but BOY do I miss live shows. My last one was Geoffroy on Feb 24/2020. I've seen a smattering of online shows and Facebook lives, and watched a few Tweedy Shows in the last few months, but oh boy, it's been weird.

I thankfully am gainfully employed at my wonderful workplace, busy as ever. Coping in general, and adjusting to this weird new normal, has taken more energy than I ever imagined. I have had a few days of vacation, etc. But I missed doing my show. So recently, I've been pre-recording them. I've done a total of three so far, and for now, it's every couple weeks.

So here are the playlists from the last three shows I did!

Playlist for December 9/2020

Your Mind’s Walking Out – Kacy & Clayton*, Marlon Williams

Silver Bells – Poppy
The Staves
Save A Kiss – Jessie Ware
Constant Fracture – Com Truise
Endless – Holy Fuck
Etmet – Witch Prophet
Mam pis Pap – Les Hay Babies
River – Margo Price
Espoir – Ariane Moffatt
Glow in the Dark Stars – Ron Sexsmith
Is This What You Really Want? – The Dears
Green Eye-Shade – Daniel Romano
Heavy Nights – Evening Hymns

November 25/2020

Arahura – Kacy & Clayton*, Marlon Williams
No Surprise – Mariel Buckley
Waltz, No. 2 (XO) – Dan Mangan
Pray It Away – Hannah Georgas, Matt Berninger
Stay Out - The Coast Mix – Elliott BROOD
Avec toi – Postscript
Tried to Tell You – The Weather Station
You Slipped Away – Andy Shauf
Leave It By The Sea – William Prince
Snow Angel – Braids
Medicine for Melancholy – Bonjay, Queer Songbook Orchestra
Keep on Pretending – Ashleigh Ball
Broken – Empress Of

Playlist for November 11/2020
Hot Hot Heat – Odario, Kamilah Apong
Sunflower – Dizzy
Love Trumps Money – Reeny Smith
No Other – Maylee Todd
Raindrops – The Besnard Lakes
Artifact – Megan Nash
I Wonder Why – Kacy & Clayton, Marlon Williams*
Polarized – Scenic Route to Alaska
Red Carpet – Jon Bryant
Nothing Changes – PUP
Problems - Baby Blue – Dead Soft
House Party – Neon Dreams
Big Universe – Jennah Barry
Small Minded World – Ron Sexsmith

*Denotes Saskatchewan-based artists.

As in other years, we still had our FM-Phasis fundraising drive, which we were hopeful that people could still help us get close to our goal.
COVID-19, this is wildfire. Feeling for the world right now.

As of Monday, hosts at CFCR were asked not to come in, so therefore, I won't be in hosting the Wednesday Buzz until further notice.

The staff is standing in currently.

So still listen, please! Music is good for the soul.

You can still get a membership online!

Take care and be kind,

So, I had a first-time cool opportunity this weekend, I hosted Couleurs Café, CFCR's Francophone music show! I am not 100% fluent, but would consider myself highly functional. It was mildly scary, but fun, aside from new-phone induced technical difficulties at the beginning. Haha.

I hosted The Buzz a day early this week!

At the top of the hour, I chatted with a local high school student who just won a huge award for her future schooling! Kylie Flynn, a student at Marion M. Graham applied for the Loran Award after encouragement earlier this year, and after a couple rounds of interviews, found out last week she was one of only 36 students across Canada who got the honour. She plans to study psychiatry. It was so cool to chat with her! I also found out that her mother had won the Teachers Building Leaders Award years ago, so this is a full circle moment for their family!

Aside from that awesome chat, I featured some new-ish tunes. Twas a fun one.

Playlist for March 3/2020
les oiseaux – Pomme
Years In The Making – Arkells
Sunflower – Dizzy
The Lookout – Sarah Harmer
Say It – Eliza Mary Doyle*
The Unforgotten – iskwē, Tanya Tagaq
Magpie – Caribou
Love Is Real (2020) – Sandro Perri
Hold On – Little Dragon
Almost minuit – Les Hay Babies
Take It from Me – KINLEY

*Denotes Saskatchewan-based artists.

Alright, I'll be back in my normal time slot of Wednesday at 5 next week, on March 11!

talk at ya then,

k

I had Janaya from the Trudel Family in to talk at 5 pm about her fam-jam-band's show this Friday at the Bassment. Their musical story is so cool, how they've always had music around, and how their sound changes as the family grows and learns.

At 5:30, Little Miss Higgins and company (bassist Patrick Alexandre and multi-instrumentalist Darwin Baker) came in to chat about their Mighty Midwinter Mini Tour which started last weekend with a Regina Winterruption performance and will end with a show at The Ironwood Stage & Grill in Calgary. They also played two live songs! They're doing two shows at Village Guitar tonight.

Yesterday's show was rad! I spoke with the wonderful Kirby Wirchenko, Executive Director of the Broadway Theatre and Winterruption Leader Extraordinaire. It's the fifth year of this extravaganza of artistry. I used that term very intentionally, because Winterruption really has it all—comedy, Indigenous and newcomer readings and celebrations, music, theatre and a lot more. It's accessible because multiple events have affordable/no cost.

And ADDED BONUS - THE WEATHER FOR WINTERRUPTION IS SUPPOSED TO BE MUCH WARMER THAN THIS WEEK HAS BEEN:
Wednesday's show was fun and theatre-filled!

At 5, Cory and Wanita from Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre's rendition of Luff Actually were in to chat about the show and how things have been going getting ready for the production. These long-running and often hilarious shows have become a huge tradition in the city.

Kenn from Dancing Sky Theatre's production of The Fourth Wise Man was in to talk about that show, and this year's version of it. The company did the show several years ago with four cast members, but this year, it features three and is told from a different perspective.

Yesterday's Buzz was a great time!

I had Paul Kuzbik in to talk about his solo project, his upcoming album Still Love. It is awesome! He's been in a range of Saskatoon bands, most recently The Pistolwhips, but decided to persue his own musical endeavours. With the help of some rad friends, he recorded and put together the album on his own, playing each instrument! His single release show is tomorrow (Friday, Oct 11) at the Capitol Music Club!
