Out there, In the Wild

Well, today is my last official day as a host at CFCR 90.5 FM.

I am moving out of the city next week to start a new life chapter. I am happy for new opportunities and adventures, but will miss everything about CFCR. It enriched my life so much.

I could wax poetic and positive forever (and already have a bit through personal channels). So above is a collage I made of just some of the hundreds of pictures I have of CFCR-related endeavours.

Also, I want to truly express my sincere appreciation. Thank you to those who I've met, volunteered with, been trained by, those who I've trained, my fellow hosts, the staff, the board, the listeners, and my friends and family. It's been an amazing privilege and honour being a part of it all.

I hummed and hawwed about how best to honour my time in sexyxe (sexy YXE, ya know!?), and I thought -- how else but to play as many Saskatoon bands I could jam into a two hour time slot? There were so many more and I named a number that I wanted to fit in but simply couldn't. Like the awesome Man Meat, great pals o' mine who are going to raucously rock Sled Island this year. Also Shooting Guns, We Were Lovers, Caves, Chunder Buffet, and the list really goes on, because, Lord liftin' we have a vast array of talent here in Saskatoon.

We're loaded up with links, so check 'em all out, k?

Golden Days

Allo.

Well. Life is funny, and interesting.

This is my second to last show with CFCR, I am all finished next week. It is certainly bittersweet. This station, its fine programming, and the stellar people I've gotten to know are amazing. CFCR's presence is the foundation of my life here in Saskatoon.

I have taken an employment opportunity in another city, and will be relocating mid-month.

Alas, the show will go on, with a new host, and I'll carry this station in my heart, for certain.

So, I've got some links about upcoming events, some as soon as this evening! Check it out.

Future Politics

Hi, pals.

Hope all's well. Apt title today...

In other news, I thought I was getting a spring cold, but it seems I have allergies. Dang, it's been strange! I can't actually remember the last time I had spring allergies, it was way before I moved out to SK though, so 12+ years, for sure. I think I'm on the mend though. Feeling mostly back to normal(ish), whatever that means.

Got some cool links for you to check out. Some festivals were announced recently, like the Gateway Festival in good ol' Bengough! Great lineup.

I am very much looking forward to seeing Joel Plaskett perform with his father Bill tomorrow at the Broadway Theatre. Dear friends of mine got me a ticket for Christmas! The Mayhemingways are opening for them. They're a two-piece band from Ontario, whom I once saw perform in front of Back Alley Music in Charlottetown, PEI a couple years ago. Should be a great evening!

Further From You

Hello!

Rad radio times to be had today.

I'm a lucky little trainer over here, I had another budding host in with me today - Emily! She was refining her skills, and it was great to chat with her and hear her on-air!

Speaking of celebrating fem/me - FEMFEST is TOMORROW NIGHT! It's going to be spectacular! The lovely folks from Girls Rock Saskatoon will also be on hand with a booth chockfull of info about that great endeavour as well.

Hi there!

I filled in for the lovely Savhanna on Snake Mountain Mixtape this evening.

I was 100% inspired by a 90s dance party that took place this week. I was thinking how much awesome Canadian music there is and was back in the 90s. Quite a few of the songs I picked were played at our junior high and high school dances back in the day.

Ready To Shine

Hi there pals! I hope all is very well for you.

I had a nice time putting together this week's playlist, no real theme in mind, just a few artists and songs I'm digging as of late. There's newer and and newish stuff, a dash of nostalgia, a few that evoke some stories, and some picks are just plain ol' random.

Last evening and into this morning, CFCR participated in the 15th Annual Homelessness Marathon, a pan-Canadian initiative by campus and community radio stations to help raise awareness. CFCR has participated the last few years, and provided content via a few of our great shows including Laundry List and Civically Speaking, just to name a couple. Links to those shows available in the right sidebar -------> right over there!

There's some other links below you should check out too, for some upcoming shows, cool videos, and a link to a story about dearly departed Canadian broadcasting legend, Stuart McLean

Abide With Me

Greetings, pals in radio. Hope it's been a good week for you!

Today I had a trainee named Fintan in hosting with me. He's got a few shifts under his belt, so today he programmed most of the show. His sweet -- and mostly jazzy -- picks are below in blue.

I love being able to help budding hosts become acquainted with being on air. It always makes me fondly recollect the days when I was learning the ins and outs of the boards and all the knobs and doodads seven (!!) years ago. I can only hope to emulate the greats that trained me back in the day - and pass on the tips of the trade they so thoughtfully imparted on me!

Dream Invader

Hi! Happy Thursday!

I had a few sources of inspiration for this morning's show.

Some was sparked by lingering/permanent nostalgia for the vast community that was established at CBC Radio 3. Some dedicated writers and music enthusiasts from that blogging collective have since come together to create their own online indie music blog. A pal from Mexico had posted her playlist, and I had actually already had a few in common! And -- full disclosure, I borrowed a couple more other great ones too -- thanks Reg. ♥

I also wanted to express my sheer adoration for some wonderful local bands -- We Were Lovers and the Karpinka Brothers! Definitely two of my favourites. And the lovely wife of Shawn Karpinka, Alyssa, tipped me off about the enthralling voice of Margo Price. Lots of serendipitous musical occurrences happening this week, I must say.

Otherwise, I just wanted to share a fun flurry of wake-up goodness. I have some sweet links below for you to check out as well - please do!

Back Among Friends

What an apt title I've chosen!

Welcome back to my playlist blog. The hiatus from posting has mostly come from the fact that my own computer has quit turning on. I've been quasi-getting by on borrowing laptops from pals (thankss!) and using the public computer at the library. Ahh technology, you necessary beast. haha.

Over the last several weeks, I have had a couple of keen trainees learning the boards: Anne and Chris. I will make sure I indicate their picks in colour code (this brings me great amounts of joy -- I love colour coding...yes I am aware I'm a nerd).

Also - HAPPY 2017!

I've been super lucky this past week to be able to help out my fellow radio colleagues by standing in while they were otherwise occupied! On January 13, I had the great pleasure to fill in for Friday Buzz host, the esteemed Brendan Flaherty, and the following day, I was in the hosting chair for the awesome themed show, Snake Mountain Mixtape.
