Winter Days

Hello! Today's show was my last of 2014. Isn't it simply bonkers how fast this year has gone by? I can't believe it. The next two Thursdays are Christmas and New Year's Day, so I will not be back in studio until January 8, 2015.

Today's show was fun. :) I played a few cool local tunes, some older classics, and a mix of some traditional and not-so traditional Holiday and wintry tunes.

When I was preparing for the show, I noticed that it was fitting for me to play a Deep Dark Woods song called 18th of December, as that is today's exact date! Whodathunkit?! Sorry, I get a bit weird around the holidays, haha.

Be sure to out the links above for some interesting tidbits, downloads and show information! Also, every year, The Line of Best Fit puts out a holiday compilation, and this year's is awesome! This is the sixth edition, so if you search the site's archives, you can find previous mixes as well. :)

Well, it's been a slice, a blur, and a year of great music. Ups and downs, celebrations, and dedications. Thanks for listening to CFCR. We appreciate it!

Talk to you in 2015!

Let it Shine on Me

Hello, folks.

Today's Saskatchewan-laden playlist was inspired by a few things. The amazingly diverse, cohesive, and stunning music scene we're so fortunate to have here in the province.

But namely, it is an homage Derek Bachman. An icon, cornerstone, and advocate for the Saskatchewan music world. He passed away suddenly yesterday, and on social media channels, it was immediately evident that he touched many lives in the too-short amount of time he was on this earth.

I did not know Derek well, just through other folks. However, I saw him around at shows and at local coffee shops, and I wish I would have taken the opportunity to chat with him much more. I knew he was an awesome guy, always on the go. The glowing words about him - and the wonderful work that SaskMusic does - have always been generously spoken among those involved in the ever-changing, constantly evolving musical arena in the province. He, along with a collection of fellow devotees, have been dedicated champions of Sask-bred musicians for a number of years.

Life is so short. I cannot even come close to feeling the impact of this loss as some others, like his family close friends. Many heartfelt tributes have already been composed, and this most recent one by Craig Silliphant encapsulates the feeling well.

This one's for you, Derek. You're missed by many already!

Oh, hey!

It's been way too long! The last time I hosted was October 15. Which was a mere 15 days ago, but a long 15 days ago. Happy to be back in the hosting chair for a bit today.

The week before last, I was away, and between travelling and everything I caught a cold somewhere in there and I literally had no voice! I was only starting to get it back last week, so didn't want to subject listeners to my squeaks and squawks. haha. Even now, I'm still a bit raspy, but much better than I was before. Anyway...haha.

Standing On the Edge

Well, hello there! I'm here a day earlier than usual, and won't be here for my regular show tomorrow? What is happening with the world?

Well, I filled in for my fellow host Britty today, and was happy to be able to help out. I am feeling a bit under the weather, and I had a bit a late-ish night, but it was worth it because I saw SLOAN last night. They are magical, and have been since I discovered them at around the ripe age of....14 or so? They've been around since 1991 -- that's 19 years of rocking. So. freaking. GOOD!

Anyway, I'll be back in my regular slot next Thursday. :)

Steal this Sound

Happy Thursday!  I am always happy and it is always a jolt of awesomeness and musical coffee to come share some tunes every Thursday. I won't be here next week, and I shall miss being on the airwaves. But, with the many amazing hosts we have here at CFCR, I know listeners' ears will be in good hands. Not literally, but you get my gist I'm sure... Moving on...

I need to say a resounding thank you to those who have supported my CFCR fundraising this year.

{via}

As previously mentioned, I am no sales gal! This year, I just asked some of those I knew who love the station, and they generously gave. I am currently at $909, which is about $91 short of my personal goal, but that's A-okay. I am elated! Funny what happens when you ask for what you'd like! :)

It means so much to me, as does this station. I am so thankful for it every day, and how it has impacted and shaped my life here in Saskatoon thus far. ♥♪ What is wonderful about community radio is that it is so many things to so many people, thanks to our varied programming.

If you are reading this, and still want to donate, you still can until the end of October 31. by heading to fmphasis.ca. Much love!

FM-Phasis Mania...LOUD AND CLEAR!

Hey darlings!

Well FM-Phasis is underway. Hoo, doggies it's going to be a fun couple of weeks!

What is FM-Phasis? Well, it's CFCR's annual fundraising drive that helps us earn much-needed dollars to help us stay on-air, and offer the amazingness that is our wide range of programming. Our goal is $70,000, and for my show, it's $960. I'm not the best at cultivating pledges, but there are amazing incentives for donating, outlined here! It includes prizes/gift certificates to choose from, sweet merch, and some amazing grand prize draws. So if you're so inclined, and you like the music and musings I share, you can donate anytime online, and just indicate the name, day, and time of the program - Green Eggs and Ham, Thursdays, 6-8 am. Every little bit helps, and thank you so much for listening!

CFCR is an important cornerstone of life here in Saskatoon as it allows the coming together of passionate people. With a small and mighty staff and a league of volunteers and volunteer hosts, we try to touch the lives of many. We appeal to music lovers of nearly every genre, people from various cultures, and we have poignant spoken word shows discussing everything from psychology to mulch, gender issues to theatre. It's truly a special place. :)

Another way to give to the station is by heading to one of our upcoming concerts. They're affordable and all proceeds go to the station. I've indicated, in red, some of the acts from today's playlist who will be performing.

Love Song to Canada

Hi there!

So, as a patriotic Canadian, I decided to help a fellow host and fill in on this Canada Day Tuesday.

Today, I decided to play songs from Canada, about Canada, or just good old Canadiana. Hey, if I'm up at 5 am on a holiday to host at my favourite radio station, I'm going to be cheesy. :)

If you listen to my regular show, I typically play Canadian music so I have a ton of it in my repertoire. Until about 10 years ago, I was seemingly unaware of the expanse of amazing talent that we have here with our Canadian artists. It does not end at folk or rock. My vision was widened by friends, a search for greener pastures, and too much Nickelback. (Sorry I don't mean to sound a the typical hatin' hipster, but I lived somewhere where they were honestly played about 3 times an hour. It was enough. They have their place in Canadian history, k?)

But point being, we have some amazing art and music to celebrate here in Canada. Today was my little dedication to that.

See you on Thursday!

This is the Year

Hi!

Ooohhh, doggies. I am so sleepy, but it's a-okay. I was at Lauryn Hill last night, which got out at a semi-reasonable hour, but it took me a while to fall asleep after the show. Even though she kept the crowd's anticipation at peak levels by not starting until after 9 pm (show was scheduled for 8 pm), it was worth every second waiting. She knocked every song out of the Bess Gardens!

I was at the studio bright and early, half asleep ready to go and wake myself with some fine tunes.

Playlist for Thursday June 26:

Desire 126 - Hollerado
Monday Morning - James Younger
House that Heaven Built - Japandroids
You Remind Me - Bend Sinister

*Denotes Saskatchewan-based artists.

I put a couple of links up there for your consideration.
  • A bang-on review of Lauryn Hill's show last night by the StarPhoenix's Stephanie McKay.
  • The new Arkells album will be coming out on August 5, but they've released the single Come To Light, and a cool lyrical video for it.
  • Hilary Grist's upcoming show at Vangelis on July 12. I adore this gal as a person and an artist. I am really looking forward to finally seeing Dominique Fricot, and witnessing Moose Jaw's Megan Nash (of PandaCorn) performing solo. It should be a magical time, so come on out if you're in #yxe that weekend!
I really liked today's playlist and had a great time putting it together. I love when I put one together and it just seems to gel... in my mind anyway! :)

It's the last Thursday of June. Where'd this month go? See you on July 3!

Pretty Respectable

Sweet and short today. I seriously can't believe it's the end of May. I always say how much time flies by but this year it really is. Maybe it's because I'm creeping up in age? Ripe ol' 32, I tells ya. Who knows.

I'll have to admit, I've got a super annoying case of the spring blahs at the moment. That being said, one thing that always helps is music! Nothing is better than a great cover of a fantastic song. And who better to do it than the adorable super-manly members of The Matinée. In need of an instant smile and/or a mood booster? Click here.

Oh and, this. It's just beautiful.

(Pssst. Matinée? You need to tour in Saskatoon again! I won't miss it this time.)

Well, till next week. I gots a treat in store for you then! :)

Today, it is my dear cousin Laura's birthday. She lives in PEI, and always listens to my show! She is an amazing gal. Her favourite band in the world is Saskatoon's own Sheepdogs. This past winter, I had the great fortune to meet Ryan Gullen, super sweet and down to earth bassist in said supergroup. I still had a copy the Rolling Stone magazine from 2011 when they won the Cover Shoot contest! I told Ryan how much my cousin and I loved the band, and he got all the guys to sign the mag, and I sent it to her for Christmas. No one has ever been so happy to receive a 2.5 year old magazine! :)

I made sure to play a couple of their tunes today, including the aptly titled Birthday

Well, see you on Thursday, May 29!

Time Stands Still

I'm having fun picking song titles as my blog titles lately.

Today, my first hour was pretty much solid rockin'. It was constructed as a musical jolt of energy, and also provided a bit of catharsis as I was building said playlist. The second hour had a good mix of poppy and folky songs.

I usually try to have little mini-sets of genres/tempos, but I just let the music lead me today. The great thing about CFCR is that we are able to play a wide variety of artists from all different musical walks. Wonderful, I tells ya!

The mind of 17-year-old me was filled with glee upon hearing the news a couple days ago! I played her Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album until it literally stopped working. I can't believe it came out 16 years ago.

Today I had a trainee host named Brendan join me in studio and he took the reigns for a few sets. He really loves his Canadian music too, and it will be great to have him join the ranks. :)

Have an excellent rest of the week, and see you on May 8.

Simple Pleasures

Yep, music is one of my simple pleasures. I get sucked into discovering new tunes so quickly, especially when people tell me about their own new discoveries and favourites. It's a fascinating, ever-evolving and endless journey for me! Simple Pleasures is also the name of a David Myles song I played today! :)

Aside: I have discovered that David Myles and I have a few things in common: we're the same age - born in 1981, and we're both New Brunswick-bred! It's the little things, folks.

For some odd reason, this felt like a great blog title.

It's super-catchy dancy song by Chromeo (which I played today!) and also a type of canned pasta. A double meaning. Good enough for me!

My Love Letter to Saskatoon ♥

So, today (April 10) was a very special show!

I am not sure why I hadn't quite done this yet, but today it was all about bands associated with the SEXY YXE. These are artists I played were a mixture of current Saskatoon acts, those from away who have settled here, and those who may be elsewhere but will always call the Paris of the Prairies home.

I usually make a strong effort to feature Saskatoon/Saskatchewan-based artists because the musical talent here - as I've discovered as someone who was not born and raised in the province - is seemingly endless and even more varied. In keeping that our annual membership drive (happening right now!) encourages Saskatonians to support their local scene, while also enjoying the many benefits a membership offers, I wanted to really highlight some of the artists that make this city so special and unique.

It's a conversation I've gotten into with people here and a concept that I am fascinated and in love with. I am not sure who originally said it, but I love that a folk artist can go to a metal/punk show and feel at home and get a hug from his or her musical comrade. While contributing some written pieces to an amazing book chronicling the Saskatoon musical landscape, I was able to really see the collaborative and cohesive heart that this city proudly (and humbly) boasts. Bands share members easily, work together on albums, record together and just...mesh. It's freakin' amazing.

It's Membership Drive Times!

So, 'tis the time of year to get or renew a membership with CFCR. If you love local music and a wide variety of spoken word and cultural programming, it's a great way to show your support. If you like discounts at all sorts of cool Saskatoon-based vendors - everything from bikes to baking, flowers to coffee - then this is a great way to save some dollas.

Plus if you sign up by April 13, you will get a chance to win some great prizes. How do I do so, you ask?

Read more here!

Thursday's show was an interesting one. Mainly because I had been engrossed in the act of moving the two days previous and was beyond utterly exhausted. No word of a lie though - coming to the station for the crack of dawn was almost better than my morning mocha.

Out like a lion

Well, Smarch is pretty much over. (Simpsons reference...)

It's been a busy month for me personally, but doin' a-okay. I've always got the music, my awesome weekly show and this amazing station to keep me going!

I had a great show today, playing some different tunes. I try my best to share music and talk about the meaning behind it, whether that is a factoid about a certain artist, their song title, the lyrics. Always searching for that message behind the notes. Sometimes I even go so far as to share things I've seen on social media - i.e. poor Jim Bryson tumbling off a ladder. (Wishes for a speedy recovery, pal!) Though I will say, I do not and will not ever take my fact-sharing to tabloid proportions, just general tidbits and well wishes.I dunno, maybe it's silly, but I try to do this so people feel connected to the artist they're hearing.

Anyhow, here's my playlist for Thursday, March 27.

So, just a friendly reminder - our membership drive is starting next week - on March 31 - and will run to April 13. During that time, we'll be out in the community at various locations, hosting shows, and having all sorts of draws. A CFCR membership is good for one year, and gives members benefits and discounts at many local business, eligibility for monthly and periodic draws, and all sorts of other cool things! :) More information is available here.

See ya next Thursday!
