Life's A Miracle

Well, 2015, you were a slice.

Great music, fun and friends. Lessons, ups, downs and all arounds.

For 2016, I just wish for continued growth, health, happiness and kindness.

I am exhausted because I attended Bandswap last evening and had a raucous good time, and got to bed fairly late. With my show being at 6 am, I'mma gonna need me some massive amounts of coffee to close out this year, but that's okay. Why not have a great time, eh!?

I'm so very thankful for experiences, CFCR-related, music-related and otherwise this year.

Check out some great year end lists for some wonderful prairie-based musical goodies.

Thanks to an awesome website, The Line of Best Fit, there are many great tunes available from fantastic Canadian artists. Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada they're called. Last year's collection was dedicated to the memory of the wonderful Derek Bachman, who passed away suddenly on December 10, 2014. ♥♫

Speaking of the sparkling Saskatchewan music scene, here's some Sask-made goodness in the form of a playlist from SaskMusic!

So, I'll be away for next week's show, but back on December 31 to close out the year that was 2015.

Till then,

Take care,

Oceans Brawl

My oh my. It's September! Wowza.

Today's show was a super fun one - who I am kidding, hanging out at CFCR is always a great time. Played a couple older fun tunes, and a few new-to-me ones too.

My ever-loving cousin who always tunes to my show in from PEI told me about the beautiful song by Imaginary Cities called Purple Heart. I love it for its name alone! The video for it is pretty as well.

I have some cool links to share below as well, including some info about the Polaris Music Prize. Alvvays is shortlisted for this year's award. There was a great Polaris Panel and chat the other day, hosted by SaskMusic and taking place at the awesome Prairie Sun Brewery. Also... I am already obsessed with Coeur de pirate's beautiful new album, just released last week. A great showcase of her talent with this bilingual collection of tunes.

Knot in My Heart

Oh, hey!

A tad behind posting these lists. Oh summer -- you were splendid, busy and zoomed by so fast. I know it's officially still summer until September 22, but the return of back to school always makes the beginning of the month feel like fall is here, even if the weather is nice.

Both weeks I kinda really mixed up my tempos quite a bit. I realize now that I repeated a few artists, but that just means I like them, right?!

Check out the links for information, like upcoming shows, cool articles, and other tidbits.

Will be back on September 3 for the 6-8 am helping of Thursday's Green Eggs and Ham!

Mostly MoSo Magic

On Thursday June 17, I awoke at the crack of dawn as per usual to host my early morning show on my favourite community radio station.

That day also led into what was a pretty busy weekend, but it is something that has become this thing of beauty, calamity, and awesomeness. Thanks to amazing organizers, volunteers, and people that come together to make MoSo what it is - pure, unadulterated magic.

The conference portion was informative, brought like-minded and passionate folks together for networking and much more. And the music portion - nothing short of amazing. What a varied line-up where there was literally something for everyone. Electronic and experimental, good ol' rock, folky, poppy. WE HAD IT ALL!

Here's my Mostly MoSo Playlist for June 17, 2015

Was, is, and is to come

Hello! Holy neglecting the ol' blog, Batman!

It's been a busy month or so. Work, traveling, various endeavours. I'll post more regularly soon, pals. This Faith Healer song seemed fitting for a title, in this instance.

The last few weeks, I've also been joined by some great trainees, at various stages of the learning process - Theresa, Amber, and Daniel! It's been fun to have them join in, learning their musical flair and tastes, as well as helping them prepare to be on air. I've had a blast working with all of them! I've said it before, and I'll say it again - boy do I love this station. What a great bunch of folks with a keen interest in community radio.

Here you go, starting in backwards order from the June 4 show. I will colour code the song picks from the folks in training. :)

Sunshine

Well, today's show was an eclectic mix, but I was dancing and singing along most of the time, to be quite honest. It was a fun one!

I felt good because the sun was rising ever so beautifully, and when it did come up, it was so bright and warm, even from the seat in studio. I thought the name of the Wet Secrets track I played today was super fitting for the theme of this bright and shiny show.

Rivers of Gold

Hello, mates!

I have been slacking a bit with posting these lists -- apologies!

Well, this past Thursday's show was sure a mix of tempos and sounds, but boy it was fun!

It was a Michael Rault sandwich, as I started and ended my show with this fine musician. He played CFCR's kick-off show last night (Saturday, April 4) at Vangelis. It's the third time I've seen him and he's like a fine wine: gets better with age... or time. Sorry, not super eloquent today.

Our membership drive is coming up very soon, running from April 6-17. This current year's card expires March 31, and there will be lots of opportunities to obtain a new one with the many events planned throughout the duration of the drive.

Our kickoff show is sure to be an amazing time, as Michael Rault will be gracing the stage (yay!!) along with Calgary's Electric Revival and Saskatoon's Triplophonics.

Why be a member? We'll you'd be showing your support for an awesome non-profit based community radio station, you get discounts at local businesses, you have the chance to win lots of prize draws, and well... why not?

Be sure to check out the cool links I shared, including a video featured on Much Music of Slow Down, Molasses. Teenage me who watched that station frequently and shows like The Wedge would have thought it was so cool to see a local band on "The Nation's Music Station." (Do they still call it that?)

Anyway, talk to you the 19th.

  • Volcanoless in Canada, a fantastic Saskatoon-based former/quasi-together band will be headlining Omfest, the 4th anniversary party for Ominocity. VIC's members have been very musically active with other endeavours, and it will be an awesome event, as per usual! It takes place on April 25.

  • Hey Rosetta! and Stars will be at O'Brien's on Monday - I gave away tickets to that show this morning. Exciting stuff!
  • Regina's own Andy Shauf is TONIGHT, and it's sold out, so if you were one of the lucky ones to snag a ticket, you're in for a fantastic show filled with his lovely tunes and incomparable stage banter.
  • Father John Misty. This new album is so succinct and beautiful. I just love it. The link I shared is the full album stream from Sub-Pop via YouTube. Go enjoy!
  • Elliott BROOD is in Saskatoon tomorrow night with Wilderness of Manitoba. That will be a great show.
There's so much greatness coming up, including our International Women's Day event, which is always a great evening of celebration. Our Chinese New Year banquet is tonight too.

Also, if you're awake in the wee hours of Thursday you should listen in on the Homelessness Marathon, which will be broadcasting live from 1 am to 6 am. According to the CFCR website, this annual broadcast is shared by campus and community stations across Canada (there is also an American marathon) in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness in Canadian communities. The Marathon will include segments contributed by 14 stations representing six provinces.

Talk to you on Thursday, February 26!

Exciting news - Joel Plaskett is going to be coming back to Saskatoon! I think it's been a good four or five years since he's been back, as he's been busy on the festival circuit, writing and producing. Yay, East Coast goodness. I am one happy prairietimer. (read: Maritimer living in the prairies. ;) haha).

Don't forget to keep an eye out on our handy-dandy events page for upcoming shows and concerts, and check out some of the links I posted above for some interesting tidbits.

Alrighty, talk to you in a week's time!

Help I'm Alive

Hello! Well, if I needed a musical pick-me-up, it came at a great time! I had a flat tire on my car this morning... le sigh. But many other things about the day so far - including some awesome tunes - have been wonderful. Lovely compliments from a friend in Montreal and a family member in PEI, and a coffee from a fellow host were definitely big reasons to smile. And I'm alive. That's a good day. :)

Well, hello 2015!
