Our Actions Matter

I tend not to get to personal/political/preachy on this blog, but this simply isn't about that.

I am showing the faces of the hardworking and industrious women who were trying to gain an education when a misogynistic killer stole the rest of their lives away from them. 30 years ago on December 6 the world lost these souls.

Hanging On a Line

Ahoy!

Yesterday's show was a pretty cool one. I chatted with Indigenous artist Bonnie Devine whose exhibit called La Rábida, Soul of Conquest: an Anishinaabe encounter, will be at Wanuskewin Heritage Park starting July 11 running to October 4. Her work is fascinating and multidimensional and faces the roots of colonialism and its impact. She was joined by Fynn Leitch from the Art Gallery of Peterborough, where the artwork was first displayed. The gallery is helping this artwork travel across the country. The exhibit will be kicked off with a reception and artist talk tonight.

Played some sweet tunes. Jen Lane's cover of Big Star's Thirteen was re-released as a radio single this week, so check out the video below! Also Kacy & Clayton just launched a video in promotion of their forthcoming album, produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy (!!) - so awesome!

This interesting piece about the environment in crisis involves puppetry and musical bits and a little bit of everything. It runs July 2-25 at parks across the city.

The Stars Behind Us

This past Wednesday's show was a busy and great one!

First, Darren and Paul from Strata Festival came in to chat about the composer-centred event which will be running June 6-19 at venues all around the city. It sounds like it is going to be fascinating, with a concert which will see performers playing from the shore to an audience on the Prairie Lily, among other cool events.

At 5:30, I spoke with Candy and Andrea, the stars of the  Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre's final play of the season. The production is called Two Indians, written by the amazing Falen Johnson. They chatted about how prep for the show has been going, what the piece means to them, and the beauty and brawl which can happen between families. Living at the Ceiling

Today's show was nothing short of amazing!

I was lucky to have a group in who will be helping facilitate an American Sign Language Interpreter Workshop this weekend in conjuction with Sum Theatre.  Thurga Kanagasekarampillai, a deaf actor and Nicole Sander, with the Network of Interpreters, Consultants and Advocates (NICA) as well as many others who helped interpret the interview live chatted about the importance of the workshop.  I don't like to play favourites, but this was a meaningful and memorable interview for me. 💕

At 5:30 Dean McNeill from the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra was in to chat about Reelin' in the Years, their upcoming concert at the Broadway Theatre this Sunday honouring and celebrating the music of 1970s stars Steely Dan. Sounds like it's going to be an amazing event, lots in store including musical guests as well as some performances by the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra too!

Life is Good Today

Awesome song, awesome blog title!

Last week, I was on Wednesday hosting duties because I took part in Girls Rock Saskatoon's All Grown Up Camp starting Friday evening. It was amazing. Youth and adults can get so much out of this wonderful organization.

The show was a busy one, as Allyson Reigh from Rosie and the Riveters was in with her 10-year-old friend Marley, who will be joining the trio on stage at their Bassment shows on May 11 and 12! It was such a pleasure to speak to them both!

At 5:30, the delightful Sylvia Chave was in to talk about her upcoming final performance in her 2018-2019 concert series and some other projects. I also sang (yes, me) for the first time on the air, as I accompanied her on her sweet song about flying kites.

The reason I won't be able to host during my normal time this week is because I was fortunate enough to get a spot in Girls Rock Saskatoon's All Grown Up camp. I'm so excited to learn some awesome and fun skills and bond with other music loving femmes! We're having a showcase of our newly acquired skills on Sunday:

At 5:30, I chatted with Michelle Grégoire, a Métis jazz pianist who is playing the Bassment with the U of S Jazz Ensemble. She said she enjoys the collaboration with artists from various backgrounds . She also added the Bassment is one of her favourite venues. Stars and Moons

This past Friday's Buzz was a blast!

I was lucky enough to have the wonderfully delightful Megan Nash in studio for an interview and live performance of the single 'Snowbank' she released the same day alongside collaborators Bears in Hazenmore! She also played a sold out show at the Bassment Friday night, which is why she was in town.

She talked about her upcoming shows and the album she hopes to have out by spring 2020, and we reminisced about the first time I saw her perform — at what is now the Black Cat Tavern. She had just wolfed down an entire baked mac & cheese and still managed to belt it out in true Megan Nash nature.

Here's a great pic of her from Friday!
